Hi Rena,
Your friend is probably severely deficient in zinc, which effects our sense of smell and taste.
Most of us are deficient at some level because our soils are terribly depleted of zinc (and of course many other nutrients).
Stress, drugs, pollution, and even calcium supplements deplete our bodies of zinc.
