It might not have been the baking soda that burned... I use plain baking soda, dry; just wipe a pinch of it in my armpits. In the summer, that gets pretty irritating, so I put on some cornstarch first.
Cornstarch by itself works pretty well, and feels a lot smoother than the baking soda.
