Lisa,
I've seen it up close too. My sister lived in London for 25 years, and once she got sick could never come back to live in the US, because she was then "uninsurable", & too young to qualify for Medicare. The NHS provided her with dacron aorta implant surgery, twice, they paid for her heart & hypertension meds, all her insulin & diabetic supplies. And when she was dying of untreatable cancer, they sent a visiting nurse around regularly, to see that she had everything she needed for a peaceful transition. She always had excellent quality care. I was there at the end, & know that her case was not unique.
Of course, those who have money always have greater choice & priviledge, in any system.

Health care costs are spiraling out of control and millions of children and adults do not have access to proper medical care. Although Americans have the best trained doctors and best medical resources available, the health care system in the United States ranks poorly compared to other developed countries.

The desire for universal health care is not the promotion of socialized medicine, but the belief that every American should have access to affordable, high-quality medical care." *
