Margi,
I, too, am an elderly woman, living on my own in near poverty, through no fault of my own. I did everything right. It just ended up wrong. And I would never begrudge anyone in need any help that they might get because I was able to work hard all my life.
You are very fortunate to have been blessed with healthy genes, perhaps at least as important as how well you've cared for yourself. Anyone can get sick, no matter how perfect their health habits may be, if they're genetically pre-disposed, can have a disabling accident caused by someone else, etc. Many factors are beyond our control.
And did Jesus, when he was busy compassionately healing the blind, the lame, the lepers, for free, judge their health habits, ask them what they did to get so sick, why they didn't take better care of themselves? Did he tell the naked & hungry to go get a job?
I don't remember reading anything about that in the gospels
