"George Washington Carver and the State of Black Agriculture"
National Black Agriculture Awareness Week

NATIONAL (June 12, 2011) In 1920 Black Farmers made up over 14 % of all
agricultural producers, partially due in part to the extensive outreach and
expertise of George Washington Carver. Currently Black agricultural producers,
farmers, and ranchers make up 1 % (1 in 100 farmers) of all agricultural
producers, farmers, and ranchers nationally, and combine for an average of 63
years of age.

"Today we celebrate the birth of the man who shaped agriculture not just for
black farmers, but for our nation as a whole, George Washington Carver" say
Tanikka Cunningham the Executive Director of Healthy Solutions, and the
creator of the National Black Agriculture Awareness Week. "Without the
knowledge and dedication of George Washington Carver this nation would not
have the USDA Cooperative Extension services that exist today. Many often
think of George Washington Carver as the "peanut man" however in addition he
created the Jessup Wagon with assistance of Thomas Campbell and Booker T.
Washington to educate Black Farmers in the rural south to become sustainable,
and profitable. He not only taught black farmers, he taught the world."

"National Black Agriculture Awareness Week is set around the birth of George
Washington Carver on purpose to not just speak of the current state of Black
Agriculture, and food access, but to educated people, especially our young
people about those who helped shape agriculture and food systems as a whole"
says LaTisha Watford co-founder of Healthy Solutions. "We take today of
National Black Agriculture Awareness Week, to pay respect to George Washington
Carver, the man who helped change the state of Black Agriculture, while we
talk about ways to improve and change the state of Black Agriculture for the
future."
