I didn't want to take atenolol either so decided to try hawthorn which is supposed to be as effective as the beta blockers doctors prescribe. It can take a few weeks to feel the effects, however, and you might have to experiment until you find the right amount for you. I use 300 mg. capsules but also use the liquid extract which works well.
Please do some research on hawthorn and see if you think it would be worth a try.
