[AlternativeAnswers] Re: Autism Op-Ed: Inaction Matters...Reflecting on the Death of the Boy in the Van

Greetings All,

I am new to this wonderful group and have been working as a Volunteer with several special needs 20-year-old youths. One has Autism and the other is Asperger's. Last year I actively began to spend more and more time with these amazing and very "special" kids. Let me tell you--if you have not spent any time with anyone who is autistic or has aspergers--you need to run out and find someone to get-to-know! Chances are....you won't have to look very far...

When I read about the autistic youth who perished in the van because his aide was somewhere else, not taking proper care of them--it made me very angry and I immediately picked up the phone and called my girlfriend who's son has autism and read the entire article over the phone. We were both in tears with anguish because we both could "feel" what should have happened and what didn't (just because the aide had something else on her mind--at the time. This is totally inexcusable.

Last year I was deeply blessed to be warmly accepted into the family living local to me who embraced me as one of them. I have a holistic background in vibrational medicine, energy work, aromatherapy, etc. and I shared some of my ideas/approaches with the family -- to which they happily tried and loved!

I am truly passionate about helping these kids because they are so sweet, loving and truthful. They do not have hidden agendas, they have enough trouble trying to communicate with us. Using intuition a lot of times helps because they can read our minds! It's a funny thing. Try repeating a phrase 3 times in your head and then sit back and watch one of these kids verbally tell you what you just said in your head.... wow!

The more I want to get to the know them, the more they want to get to know me. I continue to open my heart to them -- I can't get enough of them! Last year I participated as a volunteer at the NHS School for Autism at the Dance-A-Thon, City Island Walk-For-Autism, Sensory Picnic for Autism.

These kids are so much more than meets the eye! So much more than you could ever guess that's locked inside--anyway--thank you for allowing me to share and happy to meet you!

Blessings,
Magnetic-Girl
