[AlternativeAnswers] real soap to wash hair (and the difference between soap and detergent)

Soap is a completely different thing than detergent.

Real soap is saponified oil -- reaction of lye with fat.

"Detergent" in laundry detergent and shampoo are pretty much the same -- synthetic compounds largely made from petroleum.

In "hard" water (water containing lots of minerals), soap leaves scum behind as it reacts with the minerals. Detergent doesn't so much, but detergents cause all kinds of other, less visible problems. Here's the first useful link I found: http://solveeczema.org/problem.html

There are always many questionable chemicals added to detergents, too.

So if you live in a "hard water" area, I don't think you'll be able to use real SOAP to wash hair, without hair looking greasy from the soap scum. I've never found a way to prevent that; if anybody does, I'd love to hear it. (the water here is probably as hard as it gets)

Baking soda works wonderfully in hard water, though. I've only used [un-diluted] homemade kombucha to rinse my hair with, since when I started washing my hair with baking soda, I didn't have any apple cider vinegar (will have to try the ACV at some point).

With the baking soda / kombucha, my long, very-fine hair is soft and shiny and smooth, doesn't tangle, takes longer to look dirty, my scalp never itches any more...
