Health Benefits of Turnip Greens;

Turnips are root vegetables which are highly nutritious, delicate sweet
in taste, most popular cold seasonal vegetable, and it is widely used
in various cuisines in the countries of United States of America, Asia
and Europe. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family of plants and
botanically known as Brassica Rapa. Bulbous roots of turnips and fresh
greens of turnips are used as vegetable, as both roots and greens
contain good proportions of nutrients such as Vitamins, minerals, and
antioxidants.

Nutritional profile of Turnip roots and greens includes that of
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, dietary fiber and zero cholesterol. It
also consists of electrolytes like potassium and sodium. Vitamin B
complex constituents, Vitamins C, A, E, K found in turnips. Minerals
such as copper, calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc also
present in the same. Antioxidants like beta carotene, lutein, and
zeaxanthin also present in Turnips. Turnip roots provide 28 calories
while turnip greens provide 32 calories of energy per 100 grams of
turnip vegetable.

Health benefits of Turnip greens and roots include; turnip greens are
healthiest food for lungs as it eliminates carcinogen known as
benzopyrene that causes lungs inflammation, emphysema leading to cancer
of lungs, thus preventing lung cancer due to the rich content of Vitamin
A. Turnips lower LDL Cholesterol and increase HDL Cholesterol, prevents
atherosclerosis, by eliminating free oxygen radicals, improves
cardiovascular health due to the presence of antioxidants, Vitamin C,
Vitamin E and beta carotene. An enzyme called Paraoxonase that arrests
oxidation of both HDL and LDL cholesterol and preventing the effects of
homocysteine that causes atherosclerosis, so it is healthiest food for
Heart and cardiovascular system.
