[AlternativeAnswers] Recipes: Oatmeal Honey Bread or Fasting Bread

Good Morning!

Recipes: Oatmeal Honey Bread or Fasting Bread

This morning, I had the pleasure of waking up in Herzegovina. It is a bright and sunny morning and the air is starting to warm up as the sun rises over the mountain.

I picked up some wonderful bread from the local bakery here in a Medjugorje called Oatmeal Honey Bread or "Fasting Bread". The local baker offered me the recipe. So, I thought this recipe would be a nice addition to our Recipe Box. It is a great bread for fasting as it has plenty of protein and fiber. This recipe will make two loaves. It should take 4 hours from beginning to end.

Ingredients

Add 2 tablespoons of dry yeast to 1/2 cup warm water and let stand for 10 minutes (good yeast foams up)

In large mixing bowl add (mix well):
2 cups oat bran flour
3 1/2 cups white flour
1 flat tablespoon salt
1 cup quick (not old fashioned) oatmeal

Make a little hole in the center of your bowl before adding:
dissolved yeast
2 eggs beaten (eggs should be room temperature)
1/4 vegetable or canola oil
1/2 cup of honey, maple syrup or light molasses (your choice)
3/4 cup of warm water (Add water little bit at a time, when bread is dry add a little more, if too soupy too much water, no fear - can always add a little more flour to stiffen up the dough).

Roll onto floured surface and knead into a large ball. Place in a lightly oiled large bowl to let rise for 2 hours (on a warm place preferably). Cover with spray-oiled plastic wrap and let rise. Then when risen, punch down and roll onto floured surface again and split the dough into two balls. Roll flat and shape into elongated rolls and place in an oiled bread pan. Cover again with lightly spray-oiled plastic wrap. Let rise again for about an hour. (If you are planning to freeze all or some of the dough, this would be the part of the recipe to do so. Form the dough into loafs and put it in an airtight freezer bag. Good frozen up to one month.)

When dough rises to just above the top of bread pan, (a rounded look), you can take egg white and a little water and brush lightly on top of bread and sprinkle quick oats on top. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes and then lower temperature to 375 degrees for another 35-40 minutes. When bread is nicely browned and the top taps hollow sounding, take out and cool on wired surface.

[AlternativeAnswers] Men's Health Month: Managing Your Lifestyle Choices

Good Morning!

Men's Health Month: Managing Your Lifestyle Choices

Lifestyle factors include situations that occur during our lifetime based on our choices, such as smoking, chemical dependency, obesity, type 2 diabetes and dietary choices. Of course it is never just one factor that is an indicator of this change, but a host of factors accumulating over a lifetime. Many times, the symptoms from the aging process are confused with symptoms of a loss in virility. In general, symptoms associated with the aging process include weight gain; change in sleep patterns, hearing loss, a rise in blood pressure and/or cholesterol. These changes are often a direct result of aging. Often, by changing some lifestyle choices these symptoms of aging lessen or disappear all together. Regardless, if symptoms are due to lifestyle or the aging problems, the solutions can affect both outcomes.

1. Not smoking has a direct correlation to arterial blood flow and circulation, so by quitting smoking you can improve your fitness level, energy and sex life.

2. Weight gain increases body fat, which in turn affects hormone levels. Caloric restriction is imperative as we age. By reducing the number of calories per day to 1200, a decrease in weight will occur. Belly fat has been shown to alter hormone levels.

3. Exercise, like work, eating, sleeping, must be scheduled into your day in order for you to do it! You know when to go to work, you know when to eat, and you must know when to exercise. The best way to do this is to make it apart of your day. Increasing your exercise to 4 days will have additional benefits such as lowering cholesterol and burning more calories. In addition, weight bearing exercises (walking, weight training, jogging) help increase bone density. Exercise regulates circulation.

4. Decreasing cellular inflammation, due to free radicals is essential. Free radicals promote beneficial oxidation that produces energy and kills bacterial invaders. However, in excess, they produce harmful oxidation or oxidative stress that can damage cell membranes and cell contents. [2]. These free radicals cause inflammation.

5. Improve social relationships. Whether your social connections are with a spouse, offspring, siblings, bridge partners, and/or fellow churchgoers, they're crucial to good health while growing older. Other studies have confirmed the health-promoting power of social connections. Behavioral scientist Joan Tucker, PhD, says that having people in your life can make you feel loved and cared for, which can enhance your mental well-being.

6. Low sex drive can often be an issue as hormone levels fluctuate. Learn to boost testosterone. Staying sexually active will increase blood flow to surrounding tissue.

7. Keep your prostate healthy. The chance of having prostate problems tends to increase equally as a man ages. For instance, a man who is 50 years old has a 50% chance of having prostate issues. 60 years old, 60% chance and so on. Besides age, family history is the only other risk indicator.

8. Stress plays a major role in all biological and physiological functions. Getting long term stress issues under control has shown to be extremely important. Regulating the body's cooling mechanism through regular exercise is imperative. Exercise, meditation, yoga, relaxation techniques, massage, acupuncture, guided imagery are just a few therapies that can all help to relieve depression, anxiety, irritability, mental forgetfulness, fuzziness, over thinking and fatigue. Stress puts a great deal of burden on the adrenal glands, which, in turn, causes them to work harder. This decreases the amount of hormones needed to help reduce the effects of declining hormone levels in the body. Do this progressive relaxation technique. Use your hands. Both self-massage and acupressure can help.

9. Controlling pain. Pain issues can derail your life. Headaches, back pain and injury are some of the most common pain syndromes that can be avoided or remedied rather easily when they occur. Probably one of my best remedies for tension and pain is trigger point therapy. This can be done with a tennis ball while laying on a hard floor. Follow my treatment for trigger point therapy here. Learn biofeedback. Studies have proven it effective for both tension headaches, back pain, trauma injuries and migraines. Biofeedback is the innate ability to influence the automatic nervous system through the exertion of will and mind. Chances are you have used biofeedback yourself. You've used it if you have ever taken your temperature or stepped on a scale. These devices "feed back" information about your body's condition.

10. Eat something. Food as medicine has been used for centuries to treat a wide variety of disorders. Used for prevention as well as treating symptoms, the healing power of food and herbs has been documented for centuries. Eating food rich in plant based phytosterols can be helpful for men. A plant-based diet rich in multicolored fruits and vegetables has been shown to decrease symptoms of weight gain and decreased aging signs.

[AlternativeAnswers] Travel Tips for Any Journey

Good Morning!

Travel Tips for Any Journey

1. Balance is the cornerstone of any journey. Find things you enjoy doing. Do a variety of things, but in moderation.

2. Allow things in your life, which make your heart sing, feed your soul or nourish you on a daily basis.

3. Get organized. Plan ahead and make provisions for your trip. Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, to yourself.

4. Allow yourself to work with the "flow of nature" and change as your situation changes.

5. Be flexible as the old willow survives in a hurricane, where the brittle, stubborn oak does not.

6. The number one rule is don't drink the water, and that includes ice. Only use water from containers with a serrated seal - not tops or corks. The simplest way of purifying water is to boil it thoroughly.

7. Thoughts on food. If you can cook it, boil it or peel it you can eat it...otherwise forget it. Make sure you have a well-balanced diet.

8. Keep your hands clean. Washing your hands after being outside, after shaking hands, after every trip to the restroom and before eating. It is the number one way to avoid germs, bacteria and the common cold.

9. Keep safe. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't take risks or venture into areas you are not familiar with. Travel with someone or be around others.

10. First aid checklist includes: thermometer bandages, gauze, cotton, adhesive tape, Ace bandage, tweezers and needle (for splinters). Insect repellent such as meat tenderizer (mix with water to make a paste for bug bites), Aloe vera gel (for sunburns and skin irritations) Hydrogen peroxide, and 70% rubbing alcohol Bring eye drops, lip balm, remedy for upset stomachs, diarrhea, Dramamine, children and adult's decongestant and antihistamine, Acetaminophen (children's and adult's pain reliever), Calamine lotion (to soothe sunburns, bug bites, poison ivy). Take along a triple antibiotic cream, sun block, syrup of Ipecac (to induce vomiting in case of poisoning). Also include any prescription medications, prescriptions and telephone numbers for your doctors.
