[AlternativeAnswers] Special Movie - AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda

Special Movie Presentation

AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda

Friday, September 11, 7 – 9 pm

Admission $10

AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda is an unconventional biography about the Hindu Swami who brought yoga and meditation to the West in the 1920s. Paramahansa Yogananda authored the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and is a go-to book for seekers, philosophers and yoga enthusiasts today. By personalizing his own quest for enlightenment and sharing his struggles along the path, Yogananda made ancient Vedic teachings accessible to a modern audience, attracting many followers and inspiring the millions who practice yoga today.

Filmed over three years with the participation of 30 countries around the world, the documentary examines the world of yoga, modern and ancient, east and west and explores why millions today have turned their attention inwards, bucking the limitations of the material world in pursuit of self-realization.

Archival material from the life of Yogananda (who died in 1952) creates a spine for the narrative, but the film stretches the dimensions of a standard biography. The footage includes stylized interviews, metaphoric imagery and recreations, taking us from holy pilgrimages in India to Harvard's Divinity School and its cutting-edge physics labs, from the Center for Science and Spirituality at the University of Pennsylvania to the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California. By evoking the journey of the soul as it pushes its way through the oppression of the human ego and delusion of the material world, the film creates an experiential immersion into the unseen realms. AWAKE is ultimately the story of humanity itself: the universal struggle of all beings to free themselves from suffering and to seek lasting happiness.

IONS August Meeting Theme: The Near-Death Experience and Its Implications Re: Consciousness Saturday, August 1 10AM – 12 PM Suggested Donation $5 With the development of increasingly effective resuscitative techniques, medical science has opened what some may consider a Pandora's Box, containing reports of conscious experiences during the time patients were clinically dead. Reports of what was occurring in the room during the time doctors and nurses were striving to resuscitate the patient rule out the possibility that the experience occurred outside the time that the heart and brain were flatlined. These memories are referred to as "Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)," although cardiologist Sam Parnia, in his compelling book, "Erasing Death" prefers the term "Actual-Death Experience," stating that the patients he resuscitates have experienced cardiac arrest and cessation of brain function, therefore by current scientific standards, are clinically dead, not "near dead." NDEs challenge the prevailing beliefs on the part of mainstream science regarding the nature of consciousness as chemical activity produced by - and limited to - the brain. If the brain has no activity, how can consciousness continue? The common elements of many NDEs also reveal patterns of experience in an after-death state - at least, in the minutes or hours immediately following death - implying the likelihood of survival of consciousness after death. In our August meeting, we will discuss various types of NDE, their paradigm-shifting implications for medical science and biology, and the long-term effects of these experiences on the people who have them. [AlternativeAnswers] Stevia Health Benefits

What are the Benefits of Stevia?

A number of studies show that Stevia can be beneficial in the treatment of many health conditions. Stevia is believed to have anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-glycemic, and anti-hypertensive properties which may help with hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, chronic fatigue, indigestion, upset stomach, heartburn, weight loss, cold and flu, gingivitis, tooth decay, cavities, dandruff and hair loss, brittle bones or osteoporosis, streptococcus, candidiasis, bacterial infections and skin conditions such as cuts, wounds, rashes, itchiness, blemishes, acne, seborrhoeic dermatitis, dermatitis, eczema, and wrinkles. It may also improve energy levels, strengthen immune system, stimulate mental activity, and may also help in withdrawl from tobacco and alcohol addiction.

Uses of Stevia

DANDRUFF AND HAIR HEALTH

Stevia concentrate is believed to be beneficial for dandruff, dry scalp, and dull, dry and thin hair. People have noticed stronger, dandruff-free and rejuvenated hair after the regular use of Stevia. Simply mix 3-4 drops of Stevia concentrate into your regular shampoo and wash as normal. Also, after shampooing, using stevia tea as a conditioner and rinsing it out after 5 minutes can help retain natural hair colour and strength.

DIABETES

Studies and researches show that Stevia may stabilize blood sugar levels, increase insulin resistance, may even promote insulin production by promoting the pancreas health, discourage glucose absorption in the blood, and inhibit candidiasis - a yeast infection that flourish with sugar. Stevia is a great low carb, low sugar and low calorie sugar alternative and the steviol glycosides are not metabolized by the body and are excreted in the urine without getting accumulated in the body. A Study also suggests that Stevia may inhibit the craving for sweet and oily or fatty foods. Drinking tea made with crushed raw Stevia leaves, or with its extract or tea bags two to three times daily may help with hyperglycemia. To make Stevia tea, heat - not boil one cup of water and let a tea bag or 1teaspoon of its leaves steep in it for 5 -7 minutes. Drink it hot or cold. Or 3-4 drops of Stevia extract can be added to warm or cold cup of water. Also stevia can be used as a natural alternative to any other artificial sweetener being used.

GINGIVITIS

Study shows that antibacterial properties of Stevia may help with gingivitis, cavities, tooth decay and mouth sores. It may suppress the development and reproduction of infectious organisms in the gums and teeth, inhibit the growth of plaque and may improve overall oral health. People who have used Stevia as a mouthwash has reported significant decrease in gingivitis and other mouth infections. Simply gargling with Stevia mouthwash and brushing with Stevia added toothpaste may be beneficial. To make Stevia mouthwash, add 3-4 drops of Stevia extract in half a cup of lukewarm water or steep half a cup of tea with its leaves or teabag and gargle three to four times daily especially in the morning and at night. For toothpaste, mix 2 drops of Stevia extract to the regular toothpaste.

Gingivitis is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria. As stevia contains antibacterial and inflammatory compounds, it prevents the colonization of bacteria in the mouth and around the gums. This in turn hinders the formation of cavities and plaque that predominantly contributes to the onset of gingivitis.

Tip: Add few drops of stevia extract to your toothpaste or gargle regularly with the stevia mouthwash or stevia tea. To make stevia mouthwash add two to three drops of stevia extract to a small cup of warm water and gargle. Read about how to treat various oral problems like toothache, bad breath and yellow teeth at home.

HEARTBURN AND INDIGESTION

People in Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia have been using Stevia tea to soothe upset stomach, heartburn, and to improve indigestion and gastrointestinal function. Drinking Stevia tea after every meal may serve as a digestive aid and relieve heartburn and stomach pain.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

A few longer term studies done over a period of 1 and 2 years show that stevia may lower elevated blood pressure levels. Simply drinking Stevia tea twice daily may help stabilize the blood pressure levels.

OSTEOPOROSIS

A study performed on chickens shows that by adding Stevia leaf powder to chicken feed it significantly increased calcium metabolism in the chickens and had 75% decreased eggshell breakage. A patent application for possible Osteoporosis treatment with Stevia suggests that stevia may help promote absorption of calcium in the body and help improve bone density. Suggested remedy is to make Alfalfa and stevia tea by steeping Alfalfa herb and Stevia half teaspoon each for 5-7 minutes. Drink it two to three times daily. Adding vitamin D powder to the tea or taking its supplements can be beneficial too.

WEIGHT LOSS

Recent medical research suggests that low at carbohydrates, calories and sugar Stevia may be beneficial in weight management. One preliminary research suggests that Stevia may interfere with the functions of hypothalamus and may aid weight loss by curbing the hunger sensation. Hypothalamus is a part of the brain which controls hunger, thirst and fatigue along with its other functions. Anti-glycemic activity of Stevia may also control blood glucose levels which is one of the major causes of weight gain. Stevia works as a tonic to increase energy levels in people battling for weight loss. Suggested remedy is to drink one cup of Stevia tea or mix 10-15 drops of Stevia concentrate in one cup of cold or warm water. Drink it 15 minutes before every meal.

WRINKLES AND OTHER SKIN CONDITIONS

Stevia is believed to be a remarkable healing agent for skin disorders. Its antioxidant, antibacterial and antiseptic activity may help with wrinkles, skin blemishes, dermatitis, eczema, acne outbreaks, scarring, rashes, itchiness and chapped lips. A small amount of Stevia concentrate applied directly onto the affected skin may promote the healing process. To smooth out the wrinkles, before going to bed, apply a paste made by crushed Stevia leaves or its liquid concentrate evenly all over the face and let it dry for fifteen to twenty minutes. Wash and pat dry your face and apply a few drops of extra virgin coconut oil on the face and leave it on over night to benefit from its antioxidant effects.

Stevia contains a compound called retinoic acid that thwarts the progression of wrinkles. It works by inhibiting the breakdown of cells especially collagen and elastin. Moreover, it reduces sebum production and even enhances the life span of cells.

Tip: To reap its skincare benefits, all you need to do is mix stevia extract in their regular face cream and use it on a daily basis. Alternatively, you can apply the extract on your face eStevia inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and thus, acts as a powerful natural aid to treat wounds and minor skin infections. Naturopaths believe that it has the capability to reduce the pain associated with sores and even treat athlete's foot.very night and wash it off with cold water after half an hour.

Heals Wounds - Stevia inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and thus, acts as a powerful natural aid to treat wounds and minor skin infections. Naturopaths believe that it has the capability to reduce the pain associated with sores and even treat athlete's foot.

What are the Side Effects of Stevia?

There are not any reported side effects of Stevia when taken in moderation. Based on intensive global researches and scientific reports, The World Health Organisation (WHO) of the UN and Food and Drug Administration of the US had approved the use of Steviol glycosides as safe and has established an acceptable daily intake of 4mg per kg of body weight. However, if you are taking any medication for diabetes or hypertension, due to its anti-glycemic and anti-hypertensive activity supervised Stevia consumption is advised. Some studies suggest that diabetes medication and stevia, when taken together, can cause hypoglycemia, a drop in blood sugar levels. In a similar way, research suggests stevia may cause a drop in blood pressure for people taking blood pressure medication. If you're taking any of these medications, check with your health care provider before using stevia. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your physician before using Stevia therapeutically.

Where and How to Buy Stevia

Stevia is available at organic grocery and herbal food stores in the form of raw dried leaves, white or green powder, sugar tabs, granulated or crystalline sugar, concentrate, and flavoured and nonflavourd liquids. When buying Stevia look for Stevia rebaudiana because it is considered the best type and the FDA approved steviol glycosides are extracted from this genus in the whole Stevia family.

Re: [AlternativeAnswers] Pancreas? Gallbladder? ???

Indigestion/gas/bloating? Hiatal hernia?

I get the difficulty breathing sometimes when my stomach is full, especially when I bend forward/slump. I think it's related to my hiatal hernia and not very efficient digestion. I also think it's related to stress.

Subject: [AlternativeAnswers] Pancreas? Gallbladder? ???

Something in my upper abdomen is so swollen that it's hard to breathe. This happens when I just eat too much for too many days, and it goes away in a day when I eat very little.
It took me a very long time to even figure this out -- it's a delayed reaction that goes through things like sluggishness then sick headache then this swelling. Doctors have been totally useless; I thought one of them might have finally been right when he said it was gastritis, but there doesn't seem to be much consensus on gastritis symptoms...
At least I know how to keep it from happening now, and I'm kinda thankful for it keeping me from eating even more, but I still would like to figure out what's going on...
Anybody have similar experiences?

[AlternativeAnswers] Food Choices for Late Summer

Good Morning!

Food Choices For Late Summer

When eating along with the seasons, there are two elements that should be taken into account. The "nature" of the food and the "flavor" of the food. The nature of the food refers to the foods innate temperature ie: cold, hot, warm, cool or neutral. Eating a moderate amount of all flavors sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and sour can help to keep your body balanced and regulated.

Summer is actually divided into two categories. The early part of the summer is the transition from Spring to the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. As the summer wanes the real "dog days of summer" are considered the hottest and is called Late Summer.

In general, eating light and easily digestible foods is most important. Fruits and vegetables grow and are at their greatest peak, giving us an abundance of choices for eating the right way. It is particularly important to avoid overeating especially as the summer gets later. Therefore, heavy, greasy fried foods should be avoided as they tax the heart, small intestines, stomach and spleen. Foods that are cooling in nature are what the body craves. Although the temptation for ice cold drinks, ice cream and other frozen treats seem to be appropriate, moderation is very important. Eating to much cold or raw foods can injure the spleen and stomach, cause headaches, upset digestion and slow metabolism. Bitter taste is attributed to the heart and small intestine while sweet taste attunes to the spleen and stomach. Therefore, adding some bitter foods in your diet during early summer and more sweet tasting foods in late summer, can improve the body's function. Consider watermelons, honeydew and cantalop. These fruits, in particular, have a tendency to clear summer heat, cool inflammation and benefit the Stomach. Juice therapy is a great way to take advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables and get your daily nutrition. You might also consider drinking mint, chamomile and chrysanthemum teas.

Consider eating these food for Summer:

1. Foods that are more cooling in nature such as bamboo shoot, banana, bitter gourd, clam, crab, grapefruit, lettuce, persimmon, salt, seaweed, star fruit, sugar cane, water chestnut, watermelon, lotus root, cucumber, barley, bean curd, chicken egg white, marjoram, oyster, pear, peppermint, radish, strawberry, tangerine, and yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, pineapple, turmeric.

2. Grilling is a big part of summer eating yet, grilling often dries the juices in food. If you grilled or fry meats in summer, serve them with cooling, moisturizing fruits and vegetables such as cucumber, kiwi, mango, papaya, pineapple and tomatoes. These fruits and vegetables can be lightly grilled or marinated in a side salad or side dish as they compliment the drying effects of grilled meats.

3. Keep food out of the sun. Direct sunlight causes the immediate loss of vital essences or vitamins and can spoil food. Consider keeping foods refrigerated until they are ready to be served, especially foods containing mayonnaise, oils, vinegar or sauces.

4.Enjoy vegetables such as bamboo, sprouts, bok choy, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, corn, cucumbers, mushrooms, snow peas, spinach, summer squash, water crest, seaweeds, potatoes, and Mung beans

5. Herbs, spices, condiments, oils such as cilantro, mint and dill.
